What clicks look like
Seasonality is documented, and it should shape the budget. The chamber describes summer with full beaches and most attractions open daily, and fall as quieter, while 2025 university move-in ran September 18 to 21 with later check-ins on September 22 and 23. Seasonal homes make up 3.4% of housing here (typical: 0.6%), so some streets look different in July. Pacing the budget to those weeks beats spreading it evenly, and the monthly report shows whether the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk weekends or the September week earned more of it.
Young renters search quickly. The median age is 29.5, against a typical 37.6, 53% of households rent (typical: 40.3%), only 12.4% of residents are under 18 and 57.1% of adults hold a bachelor's degree. Median rent is $2,232. Students and young workers use a phone to find what is open and close, so ads should show hours, a distance and a tap-to-call button above anything else. Residents split into very different groups. Median household income is $105,491, the median home value is $1,116,100 and poverty stands at 18.7%, nearly double the typical 9.7%. Ads for trades and clinics should state a price range or a payment option, and landing pages need to answer what a first visit costs. About 13.9% speak Spanish at home (typical: 20.5%) and 12.5% were born abroad.
The visitor economy is large but not the whole story. A Dean Runyan Associates report released by Visit California put county-wide visitor spending at $1.401 billion in 2025, supporting about 11,400 local jobs, a county figure and not the city's own. Meanwhile 18.1% of workers work from home, and the 2023 estimate of 61,501 residents is -2.3% from 2020, so local households deserve a steady budget share all year.

Movers, furniture sellers, bike shops, cleaners and takeout near the University of California, Santa Cruz run a short campaign around arrival week, which in 2025 ran September 18 to 21 with later check-ins. Dates change, so the burst is scheduled from the university's calendar.
Pacific Avenue and the wharf
Shops and restaurants on Pacific Avenue use location settings, open-now timing and current storefront photos, which matters when 85 new downtown businesses have opened since 2022. Wharf businesses add call and directions assets.
For the 53% who rent
Cleaners, locksmiths, movers and repair crews write short landing pages with a price range, a response time and a tap-to-call button for renters in Seabright and along West Cliff Drive. Tracked numbers show which neighborhood calls most.
Neighborhood ad groups
Remodelers, electricians and landscapers give the Westside and Live Oak their own ad groups, landing pages and tracking numbers. In a county with 208 remodelers, naming the neighborhood and showing nearby work sets a firm apart.

When visitors thin out in fall, Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) can keep restaurants in Seabright, studios on the Westside and shops on Pacific Avenue in front of local households with a seasonal menu or class. Search stays on for people looking now, and the report compares the two.
PPC in Santa Cruz is mostly a pacing problem. The six pieces below follow the three calendars and the places above, from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk to Live Oak, and each can be switched on or off as the season turns.
Advertisers and buyers
The 2023 list reproduced on Wikipedia puts the University of California, Santa Cruz first with 9,105 employees, the County of Santa Cruz second with 2,804 and the City of Santa Cruz third with 914. The Santa Cruz Seaside Company runs the Beach Boardwalk, and the Santa Cruz Warriors play at Kaiser Permanente Arena. It has 208 residential remodelers (2.63 times the typical county rate), 140 real estate agents (2.15 times, up 32.1%), 137 dentists (1.88 times), 97 electrical contractors (1.66 times, up 22.8%) and 25 roofing contractors (up 47.1%).
