Buyers and rivals
By resident employment, manufacturing leads with 87,118 workers (16.6%), followed by professional, scientific and technical services with 77,238 (14.7%), health care and social assistance with 61,143 (11.6%), retail trade with 47,403 (9%), education with 39,397 (7.5%) and accommodation and food services with 35,934 (6.8%). Those groups have different schedules, so an ad that pauses at 5 p.m. is wrong for the nurse finishing a shift and right for the engineer near Rincon de los Esteros.
The employers table that Wikipedia reproduces from the city, dated June 30 2024, starts with the County of Santa Clara at 22,732 employees and the City of San Jose at 8,262, then Cisco Systems at 7,500, Adobe at 4,100, San Jose State University at 4,086, Kaiser Permanente at 3,969 and San Jose Unified School District at 3,609. eBay, PayPal and Broadcom follow with 3,088, 2,808 and 2,736. Competition shows up in the Santa Clara County data, where 8,615 businesses are classed as advertising-heavy, about 45.9 per ten thousand residents, and small firms make up 84.8% of them. County totals include 871 law offices, 899 residential remodelers, 496 landscaping services and 136 roofing contractors, so home and professional services bid against many peers on paid search in San Jose. These are county numbers, not San Jose's own, and they point toward exact keywords, strong landing pages and tight location settings.

The person behind the click
Language is the first filter. Some 41% of residents were born outside the country (typical city: 24.4%), 21.9% speak Spanish at home, and Wikipedia reports over 180,000 Vietnamese residents at the 2010 census, about 10.6% of the city. Searchers often type in more than one language. Ad groups that match the language of the search, and landing pages written by a native speaker, are the cleanest way to say you can help.
Costs are high on both sides of the rent line. Median rent is $2,526 against $1,970 for the typical city, the median home is valued at $1,149,600 against $667,400, and 44.2% of households rent. Owners comparing remodelers or roofers read ads slowly and click through to see photos and license details. Renters look for movers, cleaners and quick repairs and respond to clear same-day or next-day wording.
Daily patterns vary by district. San Jose has 340,392 housing units and a median age of 37.8, only 18.6% of residents commute 45 minutes or more, and 16.3% work from home. The 2023 estimate of 969,655 is a change of -4.3% from 2020, so a campaign cannot rely on growth to fill the funnel. Schedules should follow the real rhythm of each neighborhood, such as lunch near Rincon or evenings in Willow Glen.
Pay-per-click advertising for San Jose companies often lives or dies on the phone, because calls usually beat forms on a small screen. With 5,627 residents per square mile and plenty of drivers, searchers tap to call from a car or a kitchen, so call buttons, call tracking and clear opening hours do more work than a long contact form. SAP Center and Diridon
Restaurants, parking lots and ride services near Downtown San Jose schedule ads for the hours around events at SAP Center, with open-now extensions and walking times. The campaign pauses when the crowd is gone so budget is not spent on empty sidewalks.
Rincon and North San Jose
Caterers, movers, signage firms and equipment dealers run weekday ads aimed at facilities managers near Rincon de los Esteros, with landing pages about lead times, insurance and invoicing. Ads mention the area as a location, never a named company as a client.
Meta Ads and Bing Ads
