The field is crowded and mostly small. Santa Barbara County has 2,317 businesses in the ad-heavy categories we track, or 52.5 per ten thousand residents, and 84.9% of them are small firms. That is a county figure, not the city's, yet it signals that a narrow campaign with sharp negative keywords gives a small advertiser more control than a broad one. The 2023 estimate of 86,499 residents is 2.6% below 2020, so the audience is stable, and only 5.9% of workers commute 45 minutes or more, which keeps most clicks local.

Advertisers and buyers
Buyers come from several payrolls. A June 2021 table on Wikipedia lists the County of Santa Barbara, UC Santa Barbara, Mission Linen Supply, AppFolio, Santa Barbara Unified School District, Sansum Medical Foundation Clinic and Procore as large employers, with Cottage Health also a leading private one. Those workplaces make weekday lunch, childcare, repair and clinic searches more regular than the tourist calendar alone would suggest.
By occupation, professional, scientific and technical services (6,165 workers) and health care and social assistance (6,146) nearly tie, with UC Santa Barbara and Cottage Health behind many of those jobs, while accommodation and food services employs 5,453, education 5,001, retail trade 4,133 and construction 2,756. Tourism is said to bring more than $1 billion a year into the local economy, and the Santa Barbara Municipal Airport handled 1,481,605 total passengers in 2025, so out-of-town searchers are a steady part of demand.
County counts show where advertisers pile up in Santa Barbara County: 234 law offices (1.84 times the typical rate), 233 residential remodelers (1.75 times, up 17.1%), 248 dentists (2.02 times), 241 real estate agents (2.2 times, up 36.2%) and 49 roofing contractors (up 28.9%).
