Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsMany owners believe a college town is one giant, price-hungry student crowd, so a cheap-sounding ad should work everywhere. The figures say the city is more mixed. Of 121,385 residents, 56.7% rent, 28.1% work from home, 73.8% of adults hold a bachelor's degree and only 12.2% are under 18, and the median household earns $104,716. Different streets, different weeks and different customers call for different ads.
That is why we manage Google Ads in Berkeley by street and by season, from Telegraph Avenue to Solano Avenue. Campaigns are separated by service and area, each ad leads to a landing page built for it, calls and forms are tracked on their own lines, and a monthly report explains the results in plain terms. Bing Ads and Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) are added when they suit your customers. Nobody pays a setup fee, and nobody is tied to a long agreement.

Move-in and class weeks
Housing help, storage, furniture, food and printing near UC Berkeley can raise bids in the weeks around the academic term and ease off afterward. We take the dates from the university's published calendar.
Telegraph, Elmwood, Solano
Each shopping street gets its own small radius and its own ad text, so Telegraph Avenue spend is never confused with Solano Avenue spend. The monthly report shows which street sends the best calls.
For 28.1% at home
Since 28.1% of workers are at home, a services campaign can test bids across the working day instead of only evenings. Tracked calls reveal whether the daytime audience is real for your trade.
For a 56.7% renting city
Movers, cleaners, locksmiths and internet installers can write ads for people who have just arrived and know nobody. A landing page with arrival windows and a phone button turns that urgency into a call, whether the new tenant lives near UC Berkeley or in the hills below Grizzly Peak.
Around Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Firms that serve Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory or university buildings can run ads for a facilities contact: the service, the certification and a direct number. Searches that look like job seeking or student projects are blocked as negatives.
Emeryville, El Cerrito, Oakland
Buyers also search around Emeryville (2 miles), El Cerrito (4 miles) and Oakland (8 miles). Giving each its own group shows whether wider reach pays before more budget goes there, with Solano Avenue customers kept in their own account area.
Six ideas follow from the places and numbers here, including the 121,385 residents and the 33,070 undergraduates enrolled at UC Berkeley in fall 2024. Each can begin on its own, with its own line in the report.
Who clicks and why
Age and education come first. Median age is 32.5 against 37.6 in the typical California city, and 73.8% of adults have a bachelor's degree against 34%. Readers like these skim ad text for substance, so concrete details such as what the first visit includes, how soon someone can come and what credentials the team holds tend to beat vague promises or loud discounts.
Housing sets timing. About 56.7% of households rent against 40.3%, and the density is 11,636 residents per square mile against 4,089. Median rent is $2,067 against $1,970 and the median home is worth $1,280,300. Poverty reaches 17.7%, so ads for budget services and premium services should not share a campaign, since the audience and the landing page differ. A tutoring service for a student and a home-renovation firm for a hillside owner are both advertisers here, and neither benefits from sharing a budget with the other.
Work habits split the day. About 28.1% of workers are at home against 11.8%, while 25.4% commute 45 minutes or more against 20.1%. Home workers click on weekday mornings and afternoons, and commuters click on the way in or out. Only 8.7% speak Spanish at home and 21.5% were born abroad, so start in English and add a language group only when search terms or calls call for it.
The city's population estimate for 2023 sits 4.3% below the 2020 base, and rental turnover is high, so there is always a stream of people new to Berkeley. They arrive with questions about where to find things near Telegraph Avenue or in Elmwood, and the businesses that answer in the ad text get the first call. Consistent hours and an accurate address in the ad are the easiest wins, and they cost nothing to fix. A first month often does little more than clean up location settings, add call tracking and remove clicks from people who were never going to buy, which makes the later months far easier to read.
Where ads should run
With 10.432 square miles of land, an ad account can aim at a single street such as Telegraph Avenue or Elmwood. These nine come from Wikipedia, Visit Berkeley and city sources, and each suggests a radius, an exclusion or a line of copy.
| Area | Targeting angle |
|---|---|
| Telegraph Avenue | Student-season traffic favors a tight radius with the avenue name in the ad and a calendar-driven bid schedule. |
| Fourth Street | An upscale West Berkeley strip, so ad copy can lean on quality and details instead of price. |
| North Shattuck | A dining district with a very low vacancy rate in late 2025, which hints at a busy field for restaurant and food ads. |
| Solano Avenue | More than 150 shops along the north end of the city, a good candidate for a separate budget and its own report line. |
| Elmwood | An old commercial district on College Avenue with over 50 independent boutiques, suited to neighborhood-focused ads with hours. |
| Downtown Berkeley | Arts venues around BAMPFA and the UC Theatre draw evening visitors, so open-now ads and late schedules make sense. |
| UC Berkeley | With 33,070 undergraduates and 12,812 graduate students, campus-adjacent ads should follow the academic calendar. |
| Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory | A site with about 4,000 employees where business-to-business ads need clear service and delivery details. |
| Graduate Theological Union | A scholarly campus near UC Berkeley, useful as a boundary and a reference point in ad text for nearby services. |
Area names are informal and come from municipal, county and regional publications.
Buyers and advertisers
Education is the biggest field among residents at 12,995 workers (20.9%), with professional, scientific and technical services at 12,376 (19.9%), health care at 6,544 (10.5%) and retail at 3,909 (6.3%). Other services employ 3,561 (5.7%) and information and media 3,519 (5.7%). Buyers therefore include faculty, researchers, clinicians and students, who respond to different ad styles, and the same is true on Telegraph Avenue and in Elmwood.
UC Berkeley, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Graduate Theological Union supply a steady flow of staff and visitors, and the arts venues near BAMPFA add event traffic. Businesses that serve them advertise for lunch, supplies, printing, repair and housing. Those ads work best when they name the nearest street or building and give a direct number, since people on a campus often decide while walking. A cafe near the Graduate Theological Union, a print shop on Telegraph Avenue and a caterer for an arts evening downtown each need their own ads, because the buyer, the hour and the urgency are all different.
County crowding differs by trade. Alameda County has 970 dentists (2.15 times the typical rate), 824 real estate agents (up 40.6%), 744 residential remodelers (1.52 times typical) and 419 beauty salons. Across twelve ad-heavy categories the county counts 6,210 businesses, and small firms make up 83.3% of them. A small Berkeley advertiser benefits from narrow targeting and precise landing pages, with no competitor singled out.
Work and shopping habits
Work shapes when people have time to call and what they can spend. These six sectors employ more Berkeley residents than any others.
| Sector | Share of working residents |
|---|---|
| Education | 20.9% |
| Professional, scientific and technical services | 19.9% |
| Health care and social assistance | 10.5% |
| Retail trade | 6.3% |
| Other services (repair, personal care, nonprofits) | 5.7% |
| Information and media | 5.7% |
Data: ACS 5-year estimates for 2018-2022 (civilians 16 and older). A resident's job can sit beyond the city line, so this describes people, not employers inside the city.
Businesses chasing the same clicks
Berkeley is in Alameda County, and county is the smallest area for which the Census publishes these counts. A value of 2.0x means twice as many locations per resident as the median U.S. county.
Data: County Business Patterns 2017 and 2022, employer establishments, whole-county counts. Density compares each county's locations per 10,000 residents with the median U.S. county's rate. It measures businesses, not who is buying ads.

Monthly management plans
Fees are monthly and flat, scaled by platform count, and you may cancel whenever you like. Ad spend is its own budget and is paid to Google, Bing or Meta directly. Spending over $10K a month? Schedule a call.
Common questions
Management is billed as one flat monthly fee: $895 covers one platform, $1,595 covers two, and $2,295 covers three, and no contract binds you. The ad budget is separate. It is paid to the platform and sized from your own economics. Each plan is described above, or compare plans on the pricing page.
A few campaigns draw calls on the first day, and others need two to four weeks to show a pattern. No result is promised. For a business on Telegraph Avenue, the monthly report shows which ads, hours and keywords produced calls and what we change next.
We start from what a customer is worth to you, how often an inquiry closes and how much work you can handle. For a shop on Telegraph Avenue the money is then split across months, with more in the weeks around the academic term and less in quiet stretches, and adjusted as tracked calls arrive.
Search ads reach hungry people who are already looking, and Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) can show dishes to nearby people before they search. Many restaurants in North Shattuck or on Solano Avenue run both and compare calls in one report, then lean toward whichever delivers.
It could, as separate ad groups so each place stands on its own results. Emeryville is 2 miles from Berkeley and Oakland 8, and neither mixes into the Elmwood or Downtown Berkeley groups. Places that never ring the phone are cut, and places that do receive more of the budget.
For services aimed at UC Berkeley students, yes. Raise bids in the weeks around move-in and the start of classes, and lower them in quiet stretches. We check the university's published dates instead of assuming, since schedules change from year to year.
At Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory the reader is a facilities or purchasing contact, so the ad should state the service, the certification and the delivery area and lead to a short page with a direct number. Negative keywords screen out student projects and job seekers.
Only if your data supports it. Spanish is the home language for just 8.7% of residents, so start in English and read the search terms. If a language appears, a fluent writer can draft one ad group and one landing page for it.
Each campaign is tied to a distinct tracked number and form. Reports connect calls to keywords, ads, street and hour, whether the caller was near Elmwood or Downtown Berkeley, and spend moves toward the winners.
OpenAI has begun showing sponsored, labeled placements to some users on its free and lower-priced plans, bought through its own self-serve ad manager. Targeting is broad and the reporting tools are young, so we would treat it as a small experiment. Google Ads is still where most local plans begin; reach out if you want help judging a small ChatGPT test.
